The primary focus in my paintings is the very placement of the dots. Each of these elemental marks, these dots, point directly at the present moment, and collectively they imagine an array of basic space. These are not paintings of any thing, they are an effort at placing the mind in its own motility. A visual catalyst to watch the mind move.
The paintings vary from one to another primarily through my use of color.
The critical element for expressing my felt, fleeting, emotional response to the world and its atmospheric radiance is color. In each painting, the color and compositional activity is intended to reflect the insubstantial nature of our shared reality which is often perceived to be solid and permanent.
My work concerns the spaciousness and uncertainty that underlies the stories we live by, the stories we tell ourselves and the stories with which we engage others. Beneath these narratives lies the deep simplicity of energy in motion, a vast and inherent vitality of silence.
All paintings are acrylic on panel. Titles and sizes are shown with individual pieces.
Born in New York City, I first studied drawing as a teenager in the early 1960's at the Art Student's League in New York.
My first solo exhibits were in 1976 and 1978 at Robert Freidus Gallery, in New York City. I later showed in Los Angeles (New Gallery, Santa Monica in the late 70's).
I moved to New York City from Los Angeles in 1981. I participated in various group shows in NYC (A.I.R.) and Los Angeles, Paris and Taos, New Mexico (Harwood Museum Invitational 2001). My work is in private collections along with several institutions including Niagara University, NY and Chase headquarters, NYC.
In 1995 I moved to Northern New Mexico. I have been a teacher of Tai Chi Ch'uan since the early 1980's and continue to teach Tai Chi today.
Painting is the central pursuit of my days. I pursue the vast potential of being human and how this potential is enhanced and made manifest through the aesthetic.
